Marking a Sacred Beginning: Deacon Andrej's Ordination into Priesthood

NEW PRIEST AT ST.GEORGE CHURCH

 

September 24, 2023, was a day of special blessings and deep spiritual importance at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Cincinnati. Bishop Irinej of Eastern America led the Hierarchical Liturgy bringing light and warmth to the hearts of those present. His Grace granted Deacon Andrej Pavlovic the meaningful role of priesthood, signifying the start of a sacred journey devoted to faith, service, and strong dedication.

 

Taking wisdom from 1 Timothy 4:14, which talks about valuing the spiritual gifts we receive, Bishop Irinej upheld a deep spiritual legacy. Through anointing Deacon Andrej Pavlovic, he granted him the special responsibility of priesthood—a calling that reaches far beyond our earthly existence.

 

The ceremony was filled with powerful hymns that showed the strength of faith and the unity of the community. It marked a new beginning for Deacon Andrej Pavlovic and a collective journey of faith for all who were there.

 

In response to Bishop Irinej's query, "Beloved son, what do you seek from our hands?" Deacon Andrej replied:

 Синовски одан и послушан Вашем преосвештенству, тражим рукоположење у свештени презвитерски чин.

Прошло је готово годину дана од како сам вашом руком рукоположен у чин ђакона.

Ова година била је веома плодоносна, пуна учења, узрастања и служења Божјем народу.

Дубоко сам захвалан на поверењу и подршци коју сте ми указали. Данас поново, са срцем пуним захвалности стојим пред Вама, понизно тражим Ваше стално вођство и благослов док чиним овај следећи корак свештене службе.

Као дечак нисам у потпуности разумевао речи мога оца да морам строго пазити на сваки поступак и реч. Он ми је често указивао на свој свештенички завет, да не би како обрукао не само себе већ и родитеље и цркву.

Тек сада стојећи на овом светом месту, приступајући свештеничкој служби у потпуности разумем величину тога завета и зашто је он свим срцем живео тим речима и често ми указивао на њих.

Свети апостол Павле саветује да свештенослужитељ треба бити без мане, он је именовао сваку врлину духовног пастира, који треба да буде светлији од сваког светилника и да води беспрекоран живот.

Присећајући се поука и дела мога оца, у мом животу он је одувек био управо такав најсветлији светилник.

По речима Светог Јована Златоустог; Сви требају да гледају на њега и да по његовом животу уређују сопствени живот. Презвитер се поставља за стражара дома Божијег, он је дужан да будно чува Дом Божији, односно повереним му народ.

Драги владико, свестан сам величине овог тренутка и да је дело свештенства одговорно и многотрудно, и да је велики благослов и дужност коју презвитер има над собом; како пред Богом тако и пред људима.

Ово је позив који захтева живот у светости, молитви и непрекидном проучавању Божанске речи.

Захвалан сам нашем драгом проти Петру, који ме је, старајући се за Дом Божији, месецима уназад постепено припремао и уводио у живот ове дивне заједнице.

Велико хвала и ђакону Дарку, мом либертивилском брату у Христу, на великој помоћи и братској љубави.

Посебно сам захвалан оцу Слободану Чавки из Сурчина што ме је прихватио у храму Светог Матеја као ђакона и помогао не само мени, него читавој мојој породици.

Благодаран сам Господу што ме је благословио да сретнем све ове дивне људе на које могу да се угледам и водим њиховим примером.

I would also like to mention those beautiful caring words of apostle Paul, read by newly tonsured reader Gabriel, in which Apostle Paul begs us not to receive the grace of God in vain. "We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God."

It is truly a valuable lesson at this moment.

I stand before you as a flawed and imperfect vessel. I acknowledge my weaknesses and limitations. Yet, I trust that God who has called me, will strengthen and equip me for every good work.

Your Grace, I come before you today, not seeking this ordination lightly, but with a heart surrendered to God's will.

I am reminded of the words of St. Paul, who, though he considered himself the least of the apostles, embraced his calling with unwavering dedication.

I stand before you, similarly acknowledging my own unworthiness, yet ready to serve with all my heart.”

During his sermon, Bishop Irinej linked Andrej's name to Andrew the apostle, who was the first to answer Christ's holy call. He emphasized the importance of being the first to respond to Christ's call, a message that resonates deeply with Andrej's new role in the priesthood. "You yourself must be the first to respond to his every call, the call of Jesus Christ himself," Bishop Irinej proclaimed, "and if you do that, you yourself will be on the right and proper path, as will all of your faithful who will traverse that path together with you."

Bishop Irinej shared a precious wisdom with Deacon Andrej, based on his own journey from deacon to priest and eventually bishop. He urged Andrej to approach each liturgy with the same passion and commitment as if it were his very first and last. Complacency has no place, and he must pour his whole self—heart, mind, and soul—into every service.

Apart from Deacon Andrej's ordination, the day included other meaningful events. Three devoted readers participated in a solemn ceremony, affirming their dedication to serving the faith. The consecration of icons and the impressive iconostasis enhanced the sense of holiness in the church. The joyful celebration of KSS slava, showcasing the community's lively spiritual life.
